Charles Dickens affectionately called Gad's Hill Place, his 'Little Kentish Freehold'. It is the house he dreamed of owning as a child, the house in which he lived the longest, the only house he ever owned. It is the house he loved most and the house where he died in 1870. The house and part of the grounds has been preserved with few structural alterations. It is the heart of what is often rightly called 'The Dickens Country'. The newly restored conservatory and other ground floor rooms are open including Dickens' Study.
